Guangdong(广东) Province is situated in the southern part of China mainland. It adjoins Jiangxi and Hunan provinces to the north, Fujian Province to the east, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to the west and to the south across the Qiongzhou Strait is the island Province of Hainan. Guangdong province covers an area of over 180,000 square kilometers (69,502 square miles) and has permanent population of 74,730,000. It also has 3,368 kilometers (1,300 miles) of winding coastline, which is the longest in the country. Rivers from all over the province meandering through the fertile Pearl River Delta discharges into the South China Sea at the half waypoint of the coastline. The Pearl River Delta is one of China’s most densely cultivated areas. Situated right at the top of this river delta at the confluence of the North River, East River and West River is the provincial capital city of Guangzhou, which was formerly known as Canton to the western world.

History

Guangzhou is an ancient city with a history of 2800 years. It is named ‘the spring city’ because with long summer the city is always with green plants and blooming with fresh flowers all years round. Myth legend tells of Guangzhou was founded by Five Immortals riding five rams, each ram planted a stalks of rice grain which symbolizes abundant of harvest or prosperity. And this is how Guangzhou got its nickname, ‘Yang Cheng’ literally means ‘Goat City’. Guangzhou provides traveler with their first taste of mainland China, thus resulting in also been the first place of mainland China where foreign influences enters into the country.

Guangzhou is also the main communication center of Guangdong with generous amount of railways, highways, bridges, multi levels of flyovers and labyrinth of waterways. Ferries are still very much in use as a mode of transport, which also provides river excursion. With so many types of transport, it’s not difficult to go to other places, towns and other areas in Guangdong Province.

What to see

Guangdong has many picturesque tourist places of attractions. No matter be it a natural scenic spot, a historical or cultural site, it has its own highlight and interest. Here, each tourist can find what he or she wants to see. If you want to appreciate the beautiful natural landscapes, you can go to climb Guangdong’s four famous mountains. They are Danxia Mountain in the north, Xijiao Mountain at the South China Sea, Luofu Mountain in Boluo and the Dinghu Mountain in Zhaoqing. At the south is China’s Special Economic Zone with the two well known cities of Shenzhen just north of the former British colony of Hong Kong and Zhuhai on the border with the former Portuguese enclave of Macau. At Shenzhen, you can complete a round-the-world trip in one day by visiting Splendid China and Window of the World. It exhibits collection of scale models of the world’s famous structures or monuments such as the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower of France and many others. Downtown in Shenzhen you may find the China Folk Culture Villages. This folk culture village introduces to tourist the different natural conditions and social customs of all the various Chinese ethnic groups. Different colorful ethnic group cultural dances and performances were held at every interval of thirty minutes. Besides that you may also get to see some arches, pavilions, huts and paintings on rock.

For sports enthusiastic people, there are some golf courses built with international standards in Zhuhai, Shenzhen and other cities. You can also have much fun in some excellent beaches existing along the thousand kilometers of coastline.

When to go

Guangdong has a subtropical climate. Summer can be sweltering hot and wet. Typhoon hit this province frequently in summer and autumn. Annual rainfall averages nearly 1500-2000 millimeters and annual temperature averages 19C - 26C. So the best time for travelers to Guangdong is in spring and autumn.

Guangdong is famous for its fine gastronomy Cantonese cuisine. Many returning oversea Chinese would enjoy dinning in the various restaurants. All in one words Guangdong is graceful and charming. Location: Shaoguan(韶关) is regarded as the north gate of Guangdong Province, neighboring Hunan in the north and Guangzhou in the south. It is a vital pass to the coastal area of South China.

History: Shaoguan area belonged to Chu Kingdom in the Warring States Period (476BC-221BC). The place was named with ‘Shao’ since the Sui Dynasty (581-618), and in Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties it gained the name ‘Shaoguan’ for the government established passes here to collect taxes.

Physical Features: Lying in the south part of the Nanling Mountains, Shaoguan has vast area of karst landform. Hilly area constitutes the main land of the city. The Danxia Landform is nominated for the red sandstone in the Mt. Danxia of Renhua County. The terrain is higher in the north and lower in the south.

Climatic Features: Enjoying a subtropical humid monsoon climate, the city is affected by the seasonal winds all the year round. Spring is overcast and rainy, while precipitation in autumn is fewer. March to August is the rainy season and September to February the next year is the dry season.

When to Go: Shaoguan has abundant rainfall and moderate weather, so visitors can get there at anytime, especially in spring and autumn.

Local Highlights: Folk costumes of the Yao ethnic minority is interesting, especially the marriage customs.

Scenic Spots:
Mt. Danxia: The mountain boasts of the largest scenic area and the most beautiful scenery of Guangdong. It is also a world famous geopark. The Danxia Landform is nominated for this mountain. It contains nearly 700 pieces of large red glutenite and many grotto temples.
Nan Hua Temple: 22 kilometers (14 miles) from the Shaoguan downtown, the Nan Hua Temple is a famous Buddhist site, where the sixth founder of the Buddhism generation in Tang Dynasty (618-907), Hui Neng, established the southern sect of Zen. With a history of 1,500 years, the temple keeps many national treasures, including the Da Zang Sutra, decree and cassock of thousand years ago.

Tourist Tips: Visitors can get on trains making stops in Shaoshan to Guangzhou, Kowloon for about three and four hours. Road transportation of the city is also convenient. Shaoguan has two main bus stations, the west bus station and the east bus station. Several buses to Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen will depart in the stations. In addition, there are regular buses in the east bus station departing to the Mt. Danxia every 15 minutes.

CHINA TRAVEL GUIDE ZHAOQING

Location: Zhaoqing(肇庆) City is located in the west-central region of Guangdong Province, at the middle and lower reaches of Xijiang River. Adjacent to the Pearl River Delta, the city borders Guangxi Province in the northwest and Foshan City in the southeast. It lies about 90 kilometers (56 miles) from Guangzhou.

Physical Features: The terrain of the city is higher in the northwest and lower in the southeast. Mountains and hills occupy about eighty percent of the city area, mainly in the north, northeast and central part of the city. A valley plain comprises most of the southeast portion of the city. A karst landscape in this area is also outstanding.

History: In the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC), this area belonged partly to the Nanhai Shire. In the Sui Dynasty (581-618), it was called Duanzhou and changed into its present name, Zhaoqing, in the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

Climatic Features: The city enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate with an annual average temperature of 22.1C (71.8F). The rainfall is concentrated in the period from April to September. In early winter, the weather is sloppy and it may be affected slightly by typhoons in summer and autumn. The northern mountain area experiences frost and snow in winter.

When to Go: Zhaoqing is an all-year-round tourist destination without summer heat and winter chilliness.

Scenic Spots:
zhaoqingXinghu Lake (Star Lake 星湖) Scenic Area: This scenic area consists of Qixingyan (Seven Star Crags) and Dinghu Mountain scenic spots. It is the most famous tourist zone in Guangdong Province. The Xiannv Lake (Fairy Lake), Butterfly Valley and Qingyun Temple are the highlights of the scenic area. It provides the most beautiful lake, mountain and forest landscape of the city.
Ancient City Wall: This is a part of the city wall from the Song Dynasty and is well preserved. Today, it is the symbol of Zhaoping City as a famous historical and cultural city.
Other Scenic Spots: Panlong Gorge Touring Region in Deqing County, Longshan in Fengkai County, Yanyan Crag (Swallow Crag) in Huaiji County, Bamboo Forest in Guangning County

Local Highlights:
Folk custom: In Zhaoqing, the lion dance and the dragon dance are the most popular performances in various ceremonies and festivals.

Tourist Tips: Visitors can get to Foshan and Guangzhou within two hours from the Zhaoqing passenger transport terminus. There are also many buses running to Shenzhen and Zhuhai taking about 3.5 and 4.5 hours. In addition, a water route from the Port of Zhaoqing to Guangzhou, Foshan and Hong Kong provides more options for visitors. It will take four hours from Zhaoqing to Hong Kong by train or by ship.

The commercial area centered on Tianning Road (North) and 3rd Jianshe Road is the busiest section of the city, with many marketplaces, stores and cinemas. It is an excellent shopping destination.

Location: Jiangmen(江门) City is located in south-central of Guangdong Province, west of the Pearl River Delta. Adjacent to Zhongshan in the east and Foshan in the north, the city faces southward to the South Sea and neighboring Hong Kong and Macau.

History: In the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), bazaars began to be gathered in this area. In early years of the 17th Century, it gradually became a trade center in the Pearl River Delta, being a busy place of distribution in the middle and lower reaches of the Xijiang River. Jiangmen was once a dependency of the Xinhui County before Jiangmen City’s establishment in 1925. It is a well-known town of oversea compatriots. As early as the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Jiangmen people began to leave home and settle abroad.

Physical Features: Vast area of hills and mountains is disbursed over the north and the northwest of Jiangmen, while the river valleys, fluvial plains and delta plains, mainly scattered in eastern, central and southern part of the city, are interweaved with sporadic hills and terraces. It has a coastline of 330 kilometers (205 miles) with 268 islands of all sizes dotted along the shores.

Climatic Features: Standing at low latitude, subtropical zone, the city enjoys a maritime monsoon climate featuring warm and humid weather. Its temperature during a year varies slightly, at an average value of 22C (72F). April to September is the flood season collecting eighty percent of the rainfall of the whole year. Typhoon may frequently affect Jiangmen during July to September.

When to Go: Visitors should avoid going there during the flood season and the period typhoon frequently occurs.

Local Highlights: Jiangmen has three rivers running through. Around the Dragon Boat Festival (in the fifth day of the fifth lunar month), people would like to participate in the dragon boat races. During the activity, exhibition games and friendly games and formal competitions are held to satisfy the folks’ passion and enthusiasm.

Scenic Spots:
Chuan Island: Situated in the Chuandao Town, Taishan City, the Chuan Island has a coastline of 222.3 kilometers (138 miles) with a multitude of beautiful islets. The most famous islets are the Shangchuan Island and the Xiachuan Island, on which there are enchanting beaches and primeval second forest, strange rocks and hills.

Liyuan Garden: This private garden was built by an oversea compatriot in 1936. Located in Tangkou Town, Kaiping City, the garden can be regarded as a first-rate one combining with the lingering charms of China and the occident. The layout of the garden can be delimited into Villa Zone, Grand Garden and Little Garden.

Guifeng Mountain: The mountain is situated in Xinhui District and this famous scenic spot has elevated to a national forest park and ranks as one of the famous tourist zones in Guangdong. Relying on its advantaged natural resources, the lofty mountains, emerald forest and lakes give the mountain endless vigor. There are regular buses passing by the mountain in Jiangmen General Bus Station and Xinhui General Bus Station in Xinhui District.

Tourist Tips:
1. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport has opened the Airport Express which greatly shortens the trip to the airport to circa 110 minutes. Visitors can check in ahead of time in the airport terminal established by the Baiyun Airport in Jiangmen City. In addition, the completion of the Jiangmen-Zhuhai Expressway makes the journey to Zhuhai Airport reduce from previous two hours to one hour. All these greatly facilitate the transport getting in and out of Jiangmen.
2. Jiangmen to Hong Kong and Macau ferry terminal lies in the Jiangmen Hi-tech Development Zone. Every day, there are three ships to Hong Kong and one to Macau. Due to the public holidays of Hong Kong, ships between the ferry terminals of Jiangmen and Hong Kong will rearrange the ships.

CHINA TRAVEL GUIDE ZHUHAI

zhuhai Located at the southern tip of the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province, Zhuhai(珠海) is one of the five special economic zones in China. It faces Hong Kong in the east across the sea and joins Macau in the south. Also, it is close to many other cities in Guangdong Province.

Standing on the west bank of the estuary of the Pearl River to the South China Sea, Zhuhai is a gardenlike coastal city with 146 charming islands. With its amazing large green area, the city is a modern ecotypic resort. The beautiful Jingshan Road and Qinglu Road (Lovers’ Road) add romantic atmosphere to Zhuhai. In 1990s, Zhuhai City as a whole was selected as one of the top 40 tourist attractions in China. And in 1998, it won the Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment. Since then, Zhuhai has become known to the world as a most suitable place for human living.

Actually, people have lived there since the Neolithic Age four or five thousand years ago. A government administrative department was set up in the area in the Qin Dynasty (221 - 206 B.C.). During the following centuries, the area underwent slow but steady development. In 1953, Zhuhai County was set up there, upgraded to Zhuhai City in 1979. In 1980, a special economic zone was established in Zhuhai. Today, the city has under its jurisdiction three districts, namely, Xiangzhou, Doumen, and Jinwan.

In recent years, Zhuhai has made progress in economic development owning to its advantageous geographical location near Hong Kong and Macao, its ports with excellent conditions, its overseas Chinese contributions, and especially the policy of reform and opening up. Foreign investment, advanced technologies and management methods stimulated the economic boom of Zhuhai. As a result, the transportation and accommodations improved. Diversified transportation links provide a wide range of ways to get there or to travel inside the city. A variety of star rated hotels offer convenience and enjoyment.

Location: Situated in the southeast of Guangdong Province, Huizhou(惠州) is off the Dayawan(大亚湾) Bay of the South China Sea and is neighbor to Shenzhen(深圳) and Hong Kong.

History: Early in the Neolithic Age, human beings started to live in this area. In 591 of the Sui Dynasty (581-618), the government set up Xunzhou, which then became one of the political, economic and cultural centers of Guangdong. The name of Huizhou came into being in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). In 1949 when the new Republic of China was established, the government set Huiyang County as the capital of Dongjiang Area. In 1994, Huiyang County was changed into a prefecture-level city.

Physical Features: In the north and east parts of Huizhou lie ranges of mountains and hills while in the middle covers large areas of plains. The south of Huizhou is decorated with long meandering coastline which brings charming sceneries.

Climatic Features: Huizhou belongs to the subtropical monsoon climate zone, with the Tropic of Cancer crosses the city. The climate is mild and humid. The annual average temperature is about 22C (72F). Rains are frequent from April to August.

When to Go: Due to the pleasant climate all year round, it is marvelous to visit Huizhou at any time of a year. However, it’s better to avoid the rainy period that is from July to August. From September to October, it is sunny and good time for visit.

Local Highlights: Huizhou is the historical and cultural city of Guangdong as well as one of the ‘China Top Tourist Cities’. Scenic spots are varied in mountains, rivers, seas and forests. The local tradition is quite interesting such as Dragon Dance in the Spring Festival and Moon Admiring on Mid Autumn Festival, which is the second most important festival in Huizhou. Yao ethnic minority group in Longmen County has special customs, adding more charm to Huizhou. In addition, Huizhou has become the largest battery and laser head production base in the world, the largest telephone and computer mainboard production base in Asia and the largest television, camera and other advanced electronical productions base in China. 17 of the world’s top 500 enterprises have branches in Huizhou.

Famous Tourist Spots:
Luofu Mountain: Off the Dongjiang River, Luofu Mountain is one of the ten most famous mountains in China. It is also renowned for the Taoism culture.
Nankun Mountain: Located in southwest of Longmen County, it is famed as ‘Green Land on the Tropic of Cancer’. Family inns and summer escape are the distinctive features of this mountain.
West Lake: This West Lake was once as famous as the Hangzhou West Lake in the history. The reputed Song Dynasty literate Sushi has been there and left many stories.
Xunliao Bay: Situate in the Dayawan Bay, it is an unpolluted, quiet paradise for those sea-lovers. The pure water, shinning white sand make it a ‘Green Emerald’ and ‘White Golden Beach’.
Pinghai Ancient City: It is a Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) city in Huidong County. Boasting a long history of more than 600 years, it is honored as the ‘live fossil’ of southern China culture.

Tourist Tips: Huizhou is easily accessible. Huizhou Airport (HUZ) is about 25 kms (16 miles) east of the city. It has direct flights to Beijing, Xian, Hangzhou, Wuxi and other important cities in China. Shuttle buses ply from the inner city to the airport. Huizhou is only one to two hours drive to the two largest airports Guangzhou Baiyun Airport (CAN) and Shenzhen Bao’an Airport (SZX). Two railway lines cross Huizhou, extending to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shantou, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Nanchang, Changsha, Yueyang and many other cities. Almost all the counties and towns are linked by highways. In addition, more than ten scheduled buses run to Hong Kong every day. Visitors can wait for them in nearly all the hotels in Huizhou. Huizhou Harbor has direct sea routes to lots of harbors in the world with goods transportation. It takes only 40 minutes from there to Hong Kong. Air-conditioned city buses are cheap and comfortable for around-city tour.

CHINA TRAVEL GUIDE HEYUAN

Administrative Division: 1 district (Yuancheng); 5 counties (Zijin, Longchuan, Lianping, Heping, Dongyuan)

Location: Heyuan(河源) stands in northeastern part of Guangdong Province, on the middle and upper reaches of the Dongjiang River. It shares boundary with Jiangxi Province in the north. Being a traffic hub in northwestern Guangdong, Heyuan is the first stop the Beijing-Kowloon Railway makes within the province.

History: It is a Hakka population center along the Dongjiang River. Extreme long ago, settlers from present Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces were scattered around the region, living together with the minorities there. It was during the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC) that the court transferred people in North China to this area, bringing it advance Yellow River Culture. From then on, whenever a war broke in Central Plain, there would be a crowd of settlers moving there. Gradually, the Hakka cultural came into being.

Physical Features: Heyuan has a rolling terrain. Mountainous region occupies the major land of the city, and the hilly area ranks the second place. It is long and narrow. Plain area in the center is surrounded by mountains and hills. The Dongjiang River flows north and south through the city.

Climatic Features: The city bears a subtropical monsoon climate featuring relatively higher temperature, less rainfall and more sunshine than surrounding areas. Torrid and dry weather may continuously occur during July and August. However, warm winter is commonly met due to the less active cold air.

When to Go: The city is favorable for visiting all the year round due to the temperate weather.

Scenic Spots:
Xinfengjiang(新丰江) National Forest Park: This ecological tourist zone is built relying on the largest lake by manpower in South China, the Evergreen Lake. Backing on the Guishan Mountain (Laurel Mountain) the zenith of the city, this scenic area also holds hundreds of green islets dotted on the lake.
Sujiawei Hakka Village Tourist Zone: 26 kilometers (16 miles) from the downtown Heyuan, this is a fine destination to admire local country scenery and the Hakka culture, including old Hakka building and unsophisticated Hakkas.

Tourist Tips: The two principal bus stations in Yuancheng District downtown Heyuan, one is the central bus station in Daqiao Road and the other is Xincheng Bus Station in Heyuan Dadao. Buses departing there can reach Shenzhen and Guangzhou in three hours. From the Shenzhen Yinhu and Donghu bus station, as well as the Guangzhou Tianhe Bus Station, buses to Heyuan can also be easily found.

CHINA TRAVEL GUIDE ZHENGZHOU

zhengzhouhighway The capital city of Henan(河南) Province, Zhengzhou(郑州) is located in the middle of China, about 760 km (about 472 miles) south of Beijing and 480 km (about 298 miles) east of Xian(西安). After the Longhai Railway (Lanzhou(兰州) to Lianyungang(连云港)) and Jingjiu Railway (Beijing to Kowloon) were completed, their intersection, Zhengzhou, became a vital transportation hub. Thanks to this important position, the city has prospered.

With a pleasant climate, Zhengzhou is welcoming all year round. The hottest month is July and the average temperature is about 27 C (80.6 F) while the coldest month is January with an average temperature of -0.2 C (31.64 F). Autumn and spring are the best and the peak tourist seasons. You can enjoy a more beautiful Zhengzhou at that time.

zhengzhounightThe city is a national historical and cultural city and also the first destination for any Henan Tour. The ancient city was the capital of Shang Dynasty (16th - 11th century BC) 3,500 years ago when porcelain and the Chinese technique of bronze smelting were comparatively more developed. A green ceramic glaze pot unearthed in Zhengzhou has been shown to be the most ancient porcelain in China. A long history has left Zhengzhou with many cultural and historic sites. Shaolin Temple situated at the foot of Mt. Song is the cradle of Shaolin Kong Fu. If you are interested in Chinese Kong Fu, the temple and the performances must be seen. chaozhou Area: 3,081 square kilometers (1,190 square miles)

Location: Situated in the east part of Guangdong Province, Chaozhou(潮州) is bounded on the east by Fujian Province, and it neighbors Shantou in the south, adjacent to the South China Sea. It has a coastline of 136 kilometers (85 miles) in total.

History: Over 1600 years ago, the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420) established Haiyang County to administrate this area. The name of Chaozhou was first used in the Sui Dynasty (581-618). Before the establishment of the PRC, it had been the political, economical and cultural center of eastern Guangdong for quite a long time.

Physical Features: Among the main types of landform of Chaozhou, including mountainous region, hills, terraces and plains, mountainous and hilly areas constitute the major part of the city, which are mainly distributed in Raoping County and northern Chao’an County.

Climatic Features: Chaozhou belongs to a subtropical oceanic monsoon climate. Summer is longer, while winter is shorter. Its annual temperature of a year is about 21.4C (71F). Generally speaking, the rainy season may come in April, and rainstorms appear frequently in June.
